CRIME AWARENESS MONTHS
SUMMARY: To increase awareness of crime prevention and victim's rights, several organizations have created and promote commemorative events.
Below is a list of selected U.S. crime awareness events, their sponsors, and websites for more information. I encourage everyone to pick just one event to participate in.
Get involved by distributing materials, working with public officials on proclamations, holding events or trainings, contacting local media, and organizing or participating in other local activities that raise awareness.
The effort is small, and the potential impact is huge. You can help promote self-defense and personal protection with just a few hours of volunteering.
Which reminds me of the story about the starfish, which many of you have heard before. The original was written by Loren Eisley, and variations have been circulated over the years.
A man was on the beach and saw a child pick up starfishes and throw them back into the ocean. "Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" he asked the child.
"The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die," said the child.
"There are miles of beach and starfish all over. You can't possibly make a difference!"
The child picked up a starfish, threw it into the ocean, and replied "it made a difference for that one."
The lesson is that if you make a positive difference in just one life, it was worth it.
Review this list and pick one that resonates with you. Visit their website and find a local group to volunteer with. If there isn't one, why not start one yourself?
