DEFENSE AGAINST KNIFE ATTACK

SUMMARY: Learn the principles of krav maga defenses against a knife attack.

Warning: The following information presented should only be used after training adequately with a qualified krav maga instructor.

The specific defense against a knife attack or threat depends on a variety of factors: type of knife hold (regular/ice pick, oriental, straight, slash), distance, position of threat (front, side, or behind), and whether the attack is in progress or simply a threat.

In a fist fight, you will likely be surprised by the knife attack, as knives are usually concealed. Most victims didn't even know the assailant had a knife until after the attack was over, with blood everywhere.

However, a person who initially threatens with a knife wishes to achieve something - obtain money, property, or to move the victim.

Perform the technique as quickly and as soon as possible. An opportune time to neutralize the knife threat is when the attacker's attention is slightly distracted, such as when he is talking, giving orders, or listening to pleas of mercy.

Principles of Defense At Knife Point

The basic principles behind defensive moves at knife point are:

  1. Active defense with hand coupled with a corresponding body defense.
  2. Gain control of the hand holding the knife while advancing towards the attacker. Keep it from being used again by the attacker. An attacker with a knife doesn't stab just once, but several times quickly in succession. That is why it's important to keep the knife from being used again.
  3. Deliver a forceful counterattack, executed at top speed.
  4. Disarm the assailant or move away to a safe distance.

Defensive Moves

Keep a safe distance from the knife, and if possible, use an object nearby to defend, such as a chair or stick. If you notice the approaching knife at the last moment, a quick leap in the right direction, with or without a hand defense, may put you out of range. In your new position, you will find it easier to defend and attack at more convenient angles.

A typical defensive move at close range is to deflect the assailant's hand holding the knife to the side using your open hand against the back of his hand, and immediately punch with your other hand or kick. If you choose not to leave, grab his hand holding the knife, shift your weight onto it, and continue with punches and kicks.

You have several options to take the knife from the attacker, after the attack is over:

  1. Scraping it from his hand.
  2. Punching the back of his hand so the knife is thrown to the side.
  3. Applying leverage action to the attacker's wrist when he is on the ground. Use strong pressure as necessary.
